Theology for Worship and Service of the Lord

Launching a platform committed to clarity, accessibility, and biblical depth, while doing so from
a distinctly Reformational perspective, comes with challenges. Choosing a name like Sursum
Corda may initially seem like one of them. It may leave some readers wondering whether we’ve
already failed at our goal. After all, the phrase is in Latin. And not just any Latin, but the kind
most often associated with the Catholic Latin Mass.

For some, the name evokes curiosity because they are unfamiliar with Latin and want to know its
meaning. For others, it prompts a different sense of curiosity: Why would those staunchly
committed to faithful and biblical theology, specifically associated with that of the Reformation,
choose a phrase so tied to Catholic liturgy?

But our choice of Sursum Corda is neither an attempt at polemical flair nor an effort to appear
overly intellectual by avoiding the English translation (though “Lift Up Your Hearts” would
indeed make a memorable title). Instead, we believe Sursum Corda captures something essential
about the Christian faith itself. It is a simple message all people need, yet profound in its
theological riches. It points us upward, toward Christ, who sits in heaven, and calls us to
worship, union, and adoration of the God who authors salvation.

Like a sailor gazing out over an infinite sea, the gospel revealed in Scripture is endlessly deep
and vast, surpassing our comprehension, yet it has been faithfully explored by the Church
throughout the centuries. Sursum Corda expresses not only the upward call of worship and
communion with Christ, but also the rich theology and history that have shaped the Church for
two thousand years. Our use of Sursum Corda is not an appeal to a particular liturgical tradition,
but a theological orientation– upward, Christward, and heavenly– which necessarily directs our
lives in this world as we seek to be conformed to sufficient God’s Word (2 Tim. 3:16).

As such, we believe that theology is essentially applicable in nature, not distant or abstract
theory. That is the message we want this blog to embody: rich theology never detached from its
ultimate aim: union with Christ and glory to God (1 Cor. 10:31), which ultimately leads to
faithful Christian life and practice for the betterment of the Church.
So, as theological accuracy and service to God’s people are our goals, we pray that the Lord
would strengthen the Church by cultivating minds with the sole desire of glorifying God in
Christ. We want to do this with theological depth and accessibility, and submit all our opinions
with conviction, yet humbly under Lordship of Christ; as Paul says, we seek to take “every
thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5).

We invite you to lift up your hearts with us.
